The Art History and Archaeology Department at the University of Maryland delves deeply into analyzing humanity's visual creations, utilizing varied approaches that consider cultural, ethnic, religious, sexual, economic, political, and linguistic diversity. Our program equips students to emerge as professionals in diverse fields while fostering critical engagement with modern society. Art history and archaeology scholars explore a comprehensive timeline of artifacts, spanning from classical fine arts (including painting, sculpture, and architecture) to contemporary urban expressions. Through academic coursework and collaborations with prominent Washington D.C. arts organizations, students sharpen their understanding of visual culture within both art historical and archaeological frameworks, embracing multiple historical viewpoints and value systems. The department actively promotes interdisciplinary coursework, museum and gallery internships, and participation in Maryland's international study opportunities. Qualified students with at least 60 credits may pursue the department's honors track.
High school students and students with fewer than 12 semester hours or 18 quarter hours of university-level credit beyond secondary school should apply as freshman applicants.
