The Department of Mathematics and Statistics provides graduate studies culminating in Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in both Applied Mathematics and Statistics. The department's graduate program in applied mathematics began in 1970, with statistics added as a complete graduate offering in 1984. These programs thrive due to their dedicated faculty members who conduct research across diverse real-world mathematical and statistical applications while also exploring foundational theoretical concepts. Faculty develop curricula focused on cutting-edge research with practical implementations, aligning with the educational mission set by the University System of Maryland Board of Regents.

These Applied Mathematics and Statistics programs cater to students seeking advanced degrees who possess undergraduate or graduate qualifications in mathematics, statistics, or related quantitative fields. Applicants with master's degrees may enroll directly in doctoral studies. The PhD programs prepare graduates for careers in academic institutions, industrial R&D departments, and government research facilities. Meanwhile, the master's programs equip students with mathematical and statistical skills for professional roles in industry or government, while also providing a pathway for those considering doctoral studies.
