The Department of Statistics at FSU provides two Master of Science programs in Statistics: a standard MS in Statistics (36 credit hours) and an MS in Statistics specializing in Statistical Data Science (32 credit hours).
Students can also pursue an MS in Biostatistics (36 credit hours). Each program offers both coursework and thesis completion options.
The Statistics MS program features two distinct pathways: applied statistics and mathematical statistics.
The applied statistics track equips students for professional roles as applied statisticians or statistical consultants, focusing on computational techniques, methodological applications, and consulting skills.
The mathematical statistics track provides deeper training in probability theory and statistical inference, serving both professional statisticians and those planning to continue into PhD programs.
The Statistical Data Science specialization offers practical training in data management techniques, statistical methodologies, and industry-standard software (SAS and R), preparing graduates for high-demand positions in data-driven organizations.
The Biostatistics program trains students to design and analyze health-related studies, including clinical trials and epidemiological research, using statistical methods.
While all MS programs lead to statistics careers, the mathematical statistics track and biostatistics degrees offer the strongest foundation for doctoral studies. Applied statistics graduates can transition to PhD programs after completing additional core coursework and passing qualifying exams.
Completion requires 36 credit hours for Statistics and Biostatistics degrees, while the Statistical Data Science program requires 32 credit hours.
