The Department of Mathematics and Statistics provides advanced degree programs for both Master's (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Applied Mathematics and Statistics. Graduate studies in applied mathematics have been offered since 1970, with statistics programs added in 1984. These programs benefit from dedicated faculty members conducting research on mathematical and statistical applications to real-world challenges, alongside theoretical explorations. Coursework and curriculum development focus on cutting-edge research with practical applications, following the educational mission set by the University System of Maryland Board of Regents.

Students who are unable to meet the minimum GPA standards may still be admitted to graduate study by demonstrating outstanding performance on one or more of the graduate aptitude tests or by providing letters of recommendation from evaluators who can speak to the applicant's performance as a student or in a professional capacity.
Standards for admission to a doctoral program are generally higher than those for admission to a master's program. The terms of this admission are based on specific recommendations made by the applicant's department in conjunction with the Graduate School.
