The Intermedia and Digital Arts (IMDA) graduate program explores evolving artistic practices, particularly those that introduce innovative approaches presenting distinct conceptual and societal questions. Over three years, IMDA students transform Baltimore's streets, analog and digital data streams, and the renowned Center for Art, Design, and Visual Culture (CADVC at UMBC) into their creative spaces. Recent graduates have examined themes like food equity, safety, mobility, location, linguistics, selfhood, financial systems, and tech through both theoretical and artistic lenses, producing works ranging from urban interventions to networked projects, interactive installations, performances, sculptures, prints, digital media, and community-oriented art. Students collaborate with interdisciplinary faculty and distinguished visiting artists through dynamic discourse, while enjoying private studios and cutting-edge resources for film, audio, computing, photography, and printmaking. Financial aid opportunities include Research Assistantships involving instructional roles and lab work at CADVC and UMBC's acclaimed Imaging Research Center (IRC). The M.F.A. journey culminates in a thesis exhibition at CADVC accompanied by a published written thesis.
