The UMBC Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program is a graduate-level educator preparation program accredited by both the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). Designed for career changers and recent bachelor's degree holders pursuing teaching certification, the program covers foundational teaching methods, curriculum development, assessment strategies, and human growth principles. Each student completes a subject-specific methods course and participates in a 100-day Professional Development School internship, aligning with Maryland's Teacher Education Redesign initiative from 1996. The curriculum blends content knowledge with teaching methodology, following recommendations from leading educational organizations like NCTAF, NBPTS, and CAEP. Candidates demonstrate their teaching proficiency through performance evaluations, and upon completion, graduates fulfill all Maryland certification standards, earning secondary-level teaching credentials in their chosen specialization while deepening their educational expertise.
