The Department of Mathematics and Statistics provides graduate studies culminating in Master's (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in both Applied Mathematics and Statistics. Our graduate program in applied mathematics has been thriving since 1970, with statistics added as a complete program in 1984. These programs excel due to our dedicated faculty members who conduct cutting-edge research addressing real-world challenges through mathematical and statistical applications, while also exploring foundational theoretical concepts. Our faculty develops courses and curricula focused on pioneering research with practical implementations, aligning with the University System of Maryland Board of Regents' directives. The department supports PhD candidates across diverse areas of both traditional and contemporary applied mathematics and statistics. Prospective students should possess substantial mathematical and/or statistical preparation. Doctoral candidates pursue specialized advanced studies and dissertation work within departmental disciplines or interdisciplinary fields.
