This sub-discipline encompasses diverse research initiatives focusing on chemical synthesis, structural analysis, reactivity investigations, and reaction mechanisms - particularly for carbon-based compounds with biological significance. Research teams concentrate heavily on creating nucleoside analogs, biomimetic complexes, and molecules that interact with proteins and enzymes. Considerable attention is given to examining reaction pathways and transient species, especially electrophilic compounds like carbocations, epoxides, and diazonium ions, while exploring how molecular architecture influences reactivity. Further studies investigate the formation and characteristics of covalent modifications in nucleosides and nucleic acid chains.
