Students can pursue a combined BS/MS program that allows applying nine undergraduate credits toward a Master's in Physics, potentially earning the degree in under two years. The physics department provides degree programs at BA, BS, MS, and PhD levels, backed by more than 20 tenure-track faculty members. Research activities are extensive and expanding, with focus areas including: Astrophysics (studying active galactic nuclei, relativistic jets, cosmic large-scale structures) Atmospheric Physics (researching radiative transfer, Lidar technology, satellite remote sensing, atmospheric dynamics) Condensed Matter Physics (exploring THz science, molecular electronics, nanomaterials, hybrid material interfaces) Physics Education (focusing on secondary education methods, peer-assisted and inquiry-based learning) Quantum Optics and Information Science (advancing quantum computing and imaging technologies) As one of America's fastest-growing physics departments, UMBC's Physics Department has undergone significant transformation over 15 years: Tenure-track faculty count has increased by 100% Research faculty now exceeds 20 members PhD and MS programs launched in Physics and Atmospheric Physics Graduate student enrollment has surpassed 50 full-time candidates.
