The composition program offers a versatile and customized education for students pursuing careers in composition, with chances to produce concert pieces and collaborate with peers in film, video, and gaming. The program emphasizes core principles of innovative compositional approaches and methods adaptable to any musical style or medium. Student composers have their original works workshopped and performed by fellow students or professionals, with professional recordings provided. The curriculum includes a year of composition courses covering electronic music and orchestration basics, followed by private instruction where students prepare their senior recital repertoire. UMBC's faculty, primarily focused on contemporary music performance, have collectively debuted numerous works throughout their careers and frequently guide students in performing their compositions. The yearly Livewire Festival of Contemporary Music showcases both professional and student works, standing out as a key annual event.
