The UMBC History Department features a distinguished faculty recognized for excellence, collaborating closely with students to refine their abilities as researchers, analysts, and writers. While engaged in impactful research and professional organizations, we prioritize our primary responsibility: educating students. Our curriculum explores diverse subjects, eras, and themes, with special emphasis on Public History, Global History, Political and Policy History, and the History of Inequality and Justice. Equally crucial, students master core historical methodologies and techniques. From casual learners to thesis candidates, our courses teach vital skills: uncovering historical evidence, critically evaluating sources, and crafting persuasive arguments for various audiences. Consequently, our graduates pursue rewarding careers both within and beyond history—as attorneys, educators, policy advisors, and professional historians—applying these valuable competencies.
