The UMBC Dance Department provides rigorous and creative training in various aspects of dance including technique, performance, history, choreography, digital dance applications, and stage production. This program blends dance education within a broader liberal arts framework, fostering well-rounded dancers who unite physical prowess with intellectual growth, combining analytical thinking with artistic expression. Students experience diverse dance styles under the guidance of resident faculty and guest artists, acquiring fresh insights into the evolving landscape of modern dance. We aim to cultivate distinctive dance practitioners who move with artistry and possess meaningful artistic voices as both performers and creators. Our program pushes students to achieve peak performance, explore their creative boundaries, and develop critical perspectives on dance. The BA curriculum equips aspiring dancers, choreographers, teachers, and researchers with foundational training encompassing both classical and avant-garde approaches, artistic experimentation, historical understanding, technological applications, and production expertise. Additional elective courses allow for exploration across various complementary disciplines.
