The Bachelor of Arts in Biology Education (BIOE) program combines the core curriculum of the standard Biology B.A. with specialized courses needed for secondary school teaching certification. Graduates will gain comprehensive knowledge in biological sciences, qualifying them for both teaching roles and various technical careers. With over 30 tenured and tenure-track professors and lecturers, UMBC's Biological Sciences Department stands as one of the institution's largest, covering diverse research and instructional areas. Faculty research specialties include: Cellular Biology Bioinformatics Growth Biology & Immune Systems Evolutionary Studies Molecular Science & Heredity Brain Science Botany The department provides complete undergraduate and graduate programs awarding B.A., B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees, known for their research focus, rigorous methodology, close faculty interaction, and extensive lab opportunities.
