Welcome to the University of Maine's Chemistry Department. As the sole institution in Maine providing both Ph.D. and M.S. programs in chemistry, we take great pride in our academic offerings. Our faculty and graduate students participate in diverse chemical research across multiple specialties. With intentionally small research groups, we foster close mentorship between students and professors. Numerous research initiatives bridge disciplines, creating collaborative possibilities with engineers, materials scientists, biologists, and education researchers.
Most graduate students pursue Ph.D. studies, with first-year support typically coming from teaching assistantships. Research assistantships often become available starting in the second year. We ensure continuous financial support for all students maintaining satisfactory progress toward degree completion.
Physical Chemistry
Physical chemistry explores material structures and chemical reactions at subatomic, atomic, and molecular levels. Computational specialists employ mathematics and physics to model phenomena ranging from protein folding to nanoparticle characteristics. Experimentalists utilize advanced instrumentation like lasers, mass spectrometers, and microscopes to analyze chemical structures and reaction dynamics. These investigations have broad applications across chemistry's many domains, from biological systems to nanotechnology and environmental science.
