Welcome to the Chemistry Department at the University of Maine. As the sole institution in Maine providing Ph.D. and M.S. programs in chemistry, we take great pride in our academic offerings. Our faculty and graduate students conduct diverse research across chemistry disciplines. With smaller research groups, we foster close collaboration between students and professors. Numerous teams pursue interdisciplinary projects, creating chances to work alongside engineers, materials scientists, biologists, and education researchers.
Most of our graduate students pursue Ph.D. degrees, with all typically receiving teaching assistant support in their first year. Research assistantships become available, generally starting in year two. We ensure continuous financial support for all students maintaining satisfactory progress toward degree completion.
Biological Chemistry
This interdisciplinary field bridges biology with bioanalytical, bioorganic, bioinorganic, and biophysical chemistry. Specialists in this domain employ chemical methods to investigate molecular and cellular biological mechanisms. Current research focuses on creating, synthesizing, and examining molecular structures and reactions within biological systems.
