Welcome to the University of Maine's Chemistry Department. As Maine's sole institution offering Ph.D. and M.S. chemistry degrees, we take great pride in our programs. Our faculty and graduate students conduct diverse chemical research across multiple specialties. With intentionally small research groups, we foster close mentoring relationships between students and professors. Numerous interdisciplinary projects enable collaborations with engineers, materials scientists, biologists, and education researchers.

Most graduate students pursue Ph.D. studies, with first-year support typically coming from teaching assistantships. Research assistantships often become available starting in the second year. We guarantee continuous financial support for all students maintaining satisfactory progress toward degree completion.
Sustainable Energy Solutions

Global energy demands present critical sustainability challenges. Green chemistry aims to develop cleaner, renewable energy alternatives. Solar, wind, and biofuel technologies all contribute to this energy transformation. Chemists drive innovation through advanced battery systems, improved photovoltaic materials, enhanced fuel cells, and high-energy-density liquid fuel production.
