Students may incorporate relevant courses from other departments to complement their focus area. Additionally, six thesis credit hours are mandatory. After completing their thesis, candidates will defend it before a graduate faculty committee during an oral examination that also covers coursework content. French MA Program Learning Outcomes: Achieve advanced oral communication skills in French. Attain advanced written communication abilities in French. Analyze French texts and media critically to demonstrate understanding of historical and contemporary cultural contexts. Conduct ethical research by adhering to professional standards in methodology, argumentation, and citation while engaging with diverse cultural perspectives.

The University of Maine's North American French studies program emerged from the department's natural connection to its geographic setting. Maine's substantial francophone population, neighboring French heritage communities (Québécois and Acadian), and on-campus Franco-American and Canadian-American Centers have fostered significant expertise in North American French language and culture. While similar to the standard M.A. requirements, this degree focuses coursework in literature, language, and culture specifically on francophone North America.
