The Interdisciplinary Ph.D. program enables qualified candidates to undertake doctoral research in specialized fields where the University lacks a formal degree program but possesses substantial resources and faculty expertise. Participants in this program work under the guidance of a five-member academic advisory committee: Four members must be University of Maine graduate faculty, with two holding Full Graduate Faculty status (including the chair), representing diverse disciplines or interdisciplinary fields relevant to the study plan. The fifth member serves as an External Graduate Faculty Member. Students may identify a primary focus area for their studies. Degree requirements include an approved curriculum featuring coursework, language or methodological components as determined by the committee, comprehensive exams, a dissertation, and a final oral defense. Prospective applicants must consult with a Graduate School representative to align their academic objectives before applying. Typically, admission requires a relevant master's degree from an accredited institution.
