Maine's Advanced Computing and Visualization System (MCVP)
The department, partnering with the Computer Science department at the University of Southern Maine, recently secured a $20,000 grant from the University System Chancellor's office. These funds will support the acquisition of a computing cluster featuring four Tesla S1070 high-performance GPUs boasting 960 combined processor cores, along with a 4X4 high-definition display wall for each department.
GPUs have become an affordable alternative to supercomputers, and this new cluster will significantly enhance Maine's high-performance computing capabilities. The state-of-the-art equipment funded by this grant will facilitate innovative collaborative research in real-time scientific data visualization, create possibilities for establishing a statewide computational Grid, and serve as a platform for K-12 educational initiatives under the University of Maine Scientific Grid Portal project (led by Dr. Dickens). Students at both institutions will gain hands-on experience with these emerging technologies through a new distance learning course, Supercomputing Technologies, to be co-taught by both departments starting spring 2010.
