Modern life depends heavily on large-scale cloud computing systems that power everything from transportation and communication to business operations, governance, and scientific breakthroughs. These capabilities are supported by massively parallel, warehouse-sized computing facilities run by major providers such as Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft, and Google, along with various private and government organizations. Developers creating next-gen data-intensive applications and large-scale systems confront significant hurdles, from boosting performance and enhancing programmer efficiency to ensuring service quality, optimizing energy use, managing power supply, maintaining system reliability, regulating temperature, and improving operational management. Within this research domain, CSE faculty are working on developing both hardware and software frameworks for these expansive computing systems. Key research areas encompass server design, specialized hardware, GPU acceleration, scientific computing, innovative memory solutions, data center infrastructure, distributed storage systems, virtualization technologies, advanced networking, and cloud programming platforms.
