Artificial intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science dedicated to enabling machines to perform complex tasks, whether those challenging for computers (like visual recognition or natural language processing) or requiring human-like cognitive abilities (such as strategic planning or medical assessments).
UMaine's AI initiatives
The university's AI research hub is MaineSAIL, the Maine Software Agents and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. True to its name, MaineSAIL employs an agent-centric methodology in AI, working with systems that sense their surroundings, determine appropriate responses, and execute actions. Much of MaineSAIL's work centers on smart control systems for self-operating vehicles, particularly autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and coordinated AUV networks like autonomous oceanographic monitoring systems. The laboratory has pursued and continues to explore numerous research endeavors across this field.
