Welcome to the Chemistry Department at the University of Maine. As the sole institution in Maine granting Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in chemistry, we take great pride in our program. Our faculty and graduate students conduct diverse research across chemistry disciplines. With smaller research groups, we foster close collaboration between students and professors. Numerous teams pursue interdisciplinary projects, creating chances to work alongside engineers, materials scientists, biologists, and education researchers.
Most graduate students join our Ph.D. program, with all typically receiving teaching assistant support in their first year. Research assistantships become available, usually by the second year. We ensure continuous financial support for all students maintaining satisfactory progress until degree completion.
Wood Chemistry
This interdisciplinary field examines the chemical and biochemical properties of trees and derived products like pulp and paper. Advanced analytical instruments help analyze forest product composition and processing. Our wood chemistry program stands unique among U.S. chemistry departments. We're pioneering techniques to isolate wood's primary components, enhancing their use for premium products and sustainable energy solutions.
