The Chemistry PhD Program's Green Chemistry Track pioneers as the world's first initiative of its kind. Graduates from this program will qualify for standard chemistry positions across industrial, governmental, and academic sectors. Beyond foundational chemical science education, mandatory and optional courses from the Biology Department and School for the Environment equip students with specialized knowledge to evaluate human effects on ecological systems and public health.
This approach to chemistry embraces ecological sustainability throughout chemical research, product development, and manufacturing processes. Comprehensive toxicology knowledge and environmental impact analysis form essential aspects of evaluating any commercial product's complete molecular lifecycle.
Most higher education institutions lack both the specialized faculty and infrastructure required for such an innovative program. UMass Boston's distinctive collaboration between Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, and Biology faculty has made this groundbreaking curriculum possible.
