Welcome to the Chemistry Department at the University of Maine. As the sole institution in Maine providing both Ph.D. and M.S. programs in chemistry, we take great pride in our academic offerings. Our faculty and graduate students conduct cutting-edge research across diverse chemistry disciplines. With intentionally small research groups, we foster close mentorship between students and professors. Numerous research initiatives bridge disciplines, creating collaborative opportunities with engineers, materials scientists, biologists, and education researchers.

Most graduate students pursue Ph.D. studies, with all first-year students typically receiving teaching assistant positions. Research assistantships become available, generally starting in the second year. We ensure continuous financial support for all students maintaining satisfactory progress until degree completion.
Theoretical and Computational Chemistry
Theoretical chemistry advances fundamental concepts that form chemistry's theoretical foundation, including chemical bonding, reactions, valence theory, potential energy surfaces, molecular orbitals, and activation processes. Computational Chemistry applies computer simulations to address chemical challenges, utilizing theoretical methods through specialized software to analyze molecular structures and material properties.
