Welcome to the University of Maine's Chemistry Department. As Maine's sole institution offering both Ph.D. and M.S. chemistry degrees, we take great pride in our program. Our faculty and graduate students conduct diverse chemistry research across multiple specialties. With intentionally small research groups, we foster close mentorship between students and professors. Numerous research initiatives cross disciplinary boundaries, creating collaborative opportunities with engineers, materials scientists, biologists, and education researchers.
Most graduate students pursue Ph.D. studies, with first-year students typically receiving teaching assistant positions. Research assistantships become available, generally starting in the second year. We ensure continuous financial support for all students maintaining satisfactory progress until degree completion.
Chemical Education
This specialization examines chemistry learning processes, effective teaching strategies, and pedagogical improvements to enhance student outcomes. It addresses the ongoing professional development needs of chemistry educators. Research in chemical education employs mixed methodologies, combining both quantitative and qualitative approaches to data gathering.
