The Modern Languages and Classics Department faculty are dedicated to outstanding teaching, research, and community engagement, aligning with the University of Maine's Land and Sea Grant objectives. Our primary focus is delivering exceptional education to the College, University, and Maine residents. We continuously enhance our professional expertise and curriculum while supporting local communities and language educators across the state. As committed scholars, we engage in research that advances teaching methods, explores language cultural contexts, and generates new disciplinary knowledge. As the University's leading resource for diversity education and global communication, we foster worldwide language acquisition and cultural understanding. Our department provides graduate studies in French and Spanish, along with undergraduate majors in French, Spanish, Romance Languages, and International Affairs. Students can pursue minors in French, Spanish, Professional Languages, and Classical Studies, with intermediate-level courses available in various languages including Arabic, Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, and Russian. We also offer German, Hebrew, and Latin courses. Beyond training Maine's language educators and creating professional development opportunities, our department serves as a gateway to global success for all University of Maine degrees, spanning humanities and professional fields.

To earn a Spanish, French, or German certificate, students must complete at least nine credits in the chosen language, with a minimum of three credits at advanced levels (300-level or higher).
