The Department of Theatre and Dance provides a Bachelor of Arts program in Theatre. As part of a well-rounded liberal arts education, this degree allows students to explore various aspects of theatre, including performance, direction, design, technical production, historical studies, and dramatic literature. Those pursuing other majors can opt for a theatre minor or complement their studies with a dance minor.
The Theatre B.A. curriculum incorporates classes from social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, mathematics, and performing arts. Students must also complete one semester of foreign language study.
To earn the degree, theatre students complete 29 core credits, 12 elective credits, and 6 practicum credits. The program emphasizes hands-on learning through full engagement in performances and productions. Courses often conclude with practical experiences like acting performances, dance showcases, original script direction, or choreographed productions. Acting and directing students gain further experience through end-of-course showcases and the yearly Maine Masque production. Theatre majors must contribute to mainstage productions and are encouraged to participate in student-led performances.
This undergraduate program equips students for advanced studies in theatre, dance, or related disciplines, as well as for professional careers both onstage and behind the scenes. Alumni pursue diverse paths as educators, performers, designers, choreographers, directors, technical specialists, and production managers. The student-run Maine Masque theatre group remains active throughout the academic year.
