Students pursuing a New Media degree are expected to utilize digital strategies across various disciplines, including their mandatory Minor. An approved minor from an external department is required. To explore available Minors, visit https://catalog.umaine.edu/, choose the current catalog, and navigate to Majors and Minors in the right-hand menu. Most minors involve completing 18-21 credit hours.
The BA program culminates with a six-credit senior capstone project following a third-year community collaboration course. During this capstone, students develop and execute an innovative digital media initiative that must demonstrate creative advancements in expression, application, or technology. Previous projects have ranged from experimental films and animations to mobile applications, interactive games, and community storytelling platforms.
All New Media students should possess a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air that meets the technical demands of core coursework. Depending on individual focus areas, additional equipment or software may be required. For detailed computer specifications, refer to Appendix A of the SCIS Common Use Labs documentation in the Boardman Hall Lab Manual.
