The Computer Science Department provides graduate programs culminating in Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Entry into these programs is extremely selective, considering academic achievements and recommendation letters. Applicants are strongly encouraged to demonstrate both mathematical aptitude and computer science proficiency. Complete degree requirements can be obtained from the department. Master's students must establish foundational knowledge by completing four core computer science courses. The Master of Science program offers both thesis (Plan A) and non-thesis (Plan B) tracks, with non-thesis candidates required to complete a project.

Qualification Requirements
The admission decision is made by the Higher Degrees Committee based on the overall application file consisting of GRE scores, TOEFL scores (for international students), GPA, grades in CS and Math courses, background in computer science, letters of recommendation, and statement of purpose. Students admitted to the doctoral program in Computer Science who have been awarded a master's degree in Computer Science from another institution are not eligible to receive a master's degree in Computer Science from the University of Kentucky. Exceptions to this policy must be approved by the Graduate School Dean upon petition by the Director of Graduate Studies.

An overall grade point average of 2.75 on undergraduate work and 3.00 on all graduate work is required by the Graduate School.
