The Foundations program offers first-year students in Digital Media Design, Art Studio, and Art Education an immersive introduction to core artistic disciplines. Through drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, and digital media, participants master essential techniques while developing critical visual analysis skills. This transformative experience equips emerging artists with the technical proficiency and conceptual framework necessary for their creative journeys. Students explore key artistic elements including color theory, observational skills, compositional strategies, temporal concepts, material properties, and spatial relationships. By engaging with diverse methods of visual interpretation and creative challenges, learners cultivate their individual artistic perspectives during this formative exploration of visual communication.

A brief letter stating your goals for graduate study and your interest in being considered for an assistantship, fellowship, and/or internship.
Portfolio
The application for a Master's in Fine Arts (MFA) requires that the applicant upload an electronic portfolio of 20 recent artworks sent as a PDF with an image key with title, date, size, and medium for each submitted work as part of that document. (Maximum resolution 8 x 10 x 72 dpi - NO PowerPoint presentations). Time-based materials on DVD (QuickTime or DVD with menus - 10 minutes max) should be sent to the Graduate Advisor (207 Fine Arts, School of Art & Visual Studies, University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY 40506-0022) by January 6. Web address with same materials, as a back up if the CD/DVD fails, will be considered. This may be uploaded as one document under Writing Sample.
Three letters of recommendation
For the Graduate School, the minimum acceptable TOEFL score is 550 (paper-based) 213 (computer-based), or 79 (internet-based). The minimum IELTS score is 6.5

An overall grade point average of 2.75 on undergraduate work and 3.00 on all graduate work is required by the Graduate School.
