The PhD program aims to develop doctoral candidates into skilled sociologists through rigorous training in: (a) mastering sociological theories, statistical analysis, research methodologies, and specialized fields, and (b) cultivating professional expertise in academic research, teaching, and community involvement. Students collaborate closely with Sociology Department faculty and colleagues across multiple colleges, including Arts & Sciences, Agriculture, Education, and Medicine. They regularly contribute to top-tier academic publications, share findings at global conferences, apply their research in practical settings, and instruct diverse sociology classes. Graduates achieve notable success in securing positions within and beyond academia.

Qualification Requirements

All application materials, including letters of recommendations and required test scores, must be received by January 15 for consideration for the following fall semester. Admission and funding decisions are announced by late March or early April. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores are required for admission with at least an average score of the three scores at the 50th percentile. International students must also take the TOEFL examination, with a minimum score of 550 (paper based), 213 (computer-based test), or 79 (Internet based) required by the University of Kentucky Graduate School.
Statement of purpose, Writing sample, Undergraduate/graduate transcripts, GRE scores, 3 Recommendation letters, For IELTS, a minimum mean band score of 6.5 is required. Students seeking admission to the Graduate School must have obtained a baccalaureate degree, prior to the start of the term for which s/he is admitted, from a fully accredited U.S. institution of higher learning or from a recognized foreign institution. An overall grade point average of 2.75 on undergraduate work and 3.00 on all graduatework is required by the Graduate School. Individual departments may require higher gradepoint averages.
