The Ph.D. program provides comprehensive education in materials science and engineering, with flexibility to align with each student's specific focus areas. Candidates are required to perform innovative research and present a dissertation that undergoes defense. Doctoral candidates fulfill core materials science requirements and collaborate with their advisory committee to tailor elective coursework, addressing knowledge gaps while strengthening their specialization. They must also attain competency in a minor field, chosen from mathematics, physical sciences, or engineering disciplines. Advancement to candidacy requires passing an oral qualifying exam covering three foundational Materials Science and Engineering domains: Material Structures, Material Mechanical Properties, and Material Thermodynamics.
