The Gender and Women's Studies Department at the University of Kentucky explores gender in its broadest sense, examining women's cultures and achievements globally through feminist and womanist lenses. This department works to create and manage interdisciplinary academic programs in Gender and Women's Studies for both undergraduate and graduate students, while encouraging rigorous research, teaching, and community initiatives that consider diverse perspectives on gender, race, class, and sexuality. It also facilitates cross-disciplinary partnerships. Through these efforts, the department strives to advance fairness and academic distinction throughout the university and the wider community.
The doctoral program equips students with (1) core principles, theories, and structures for feminist scholarship, and (2) varied investigative techniques in gender and women's studies. Participants will develop skills to thoughtfully assess feminist theories, methodologies, and viewpoints, examine power dynamics shaped by gender and other social factors like age, class, colonialism, ethnicity, nationality, race, geography, religion, and sexual orientation, and perform and share sophisticated research in gender and women's studies.
