Biosystems engineers receive education in biological, environmental, and engineering disciplines, focusing on enhancing production system sustainability, reducing environmental risks, and conserving natural resources. These professionals create effective solutions for handling biological and agricultural products throughout their lifecycle - from production and storage to transportation, processing, and packaging. They address challenges involving systems, processes, and equipment that interact with living organisms and biological materials. Additionally, they innovate ways to responsibly utilize biological byproducts, waste materials, and natural resources including soil, water, air, and energy.

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) represents an advanced research qualification, awarded for comprehensive understanding of engineering applications in biology and medicine, coupled with specialized study in a chosen field that culminates in an original dissertation demonstrating the candidate's independent research capabilities.

Qualification Requirements

In addition to the requirements of the Graduate School, admission to the Department's program is also based on:

A minimum undergraduate grade point average of 2.8 (3.0 in graduate courses) with special emphasis given to courses in the science areas.
Official GRE or GMAT scores. We consider all applicants individually and do not publish specific score requirements for our applicants.
Three letters of recommendation from those who can speak to your academic potential.
A minimum TOEFL (internet-based) of 94 IELTS score of 7.0 or an acceptable alternate by the Director of Graduate Studies or the Department Chair. Scores must be no more than two years old.
The availability of a major advisor to work with the prospective student.
A prospective student's records will be reviewed by the Department's Graduate Committee. The Graduate Committee forwards its recommendation to the Director of Graduate Studies concerning admission An overall grade point average of 2.75 on undergraduate work and 3.00 on all graduate work is required by the Graduate School.
