The Plant Physiology program examines how plants function within their ecosystems, applying these insights to develop sustainable crop management strategies that boost productivity while minimizing environmental impact. This research also informs the creation of screening methods for enhancing plant varieties.
Soil and Crop Sciences' plant breeding initiatives focus on modifying plant genetics to enhance desirable traits. Our genetics specialists employ both traditional and molecular breeding approaches to target improvements in yield, crop quality, resistance to environmental stresses, and production efficiency. For staple crops like corn, wheat, sorghum, and rice, breeders have successfully created varieties with higher yields, better pest and disease resistance, improved standability, and enhanced nutritional or processing characteristics.
