The department's archaeology program primarily concentrates on the Americas, with particular emphasis on the Eastern and Midwestern United States as well as Mesoamerica. While current students are actively researching areas like the Southwestern U.S., Southern Plains, and various regions of South America, faculty members bring extensive knowledge spanning from the East Coast to the Rocky Mountains and from the northern Plains down to Central America. Despite their varied technical skills and theoretical approaches, all faculty members share a unified fascination with New World societies and civilizations from the Late Pleistocene era up through early historical periods.

The GRE is not required for admission to this program during the 2021-2022 academic year. For the Graduate School, the minimum acceptable TOEFL score is 550 (paper-based) 213 (computer-based), or 79 (internet-based). The minimum IELTS score is 6.5
An overall grade point average of 2.75 on undergraduate work and 3.00 on all graduate work is required by the Graduate School.
