The BA and BGS degrees share identical coursework requirements within the major, integrating concepts from psychology, biology, linguistics, anatomy, and physiology. Both programs mandate classes in humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. While the BA has distinct writing, math, foreign language, and lab science prerequisites, the BGS provides flexibility to pursue additional academic interests through two certificates, a minor, or a dual major. Both degrees necessitate completing at least 35 credit hours in Speech-Language-Hearing courses. The department also offers minor and certificate options for students focusing on communication-related careers.

Undergraduates can engage in groundbreaking interdisciplinary research, studying topics like neural processes of speech for brain-machine interfaces, improving cochlear implant technology, language genetics, word acquisition mechanisms, human speech perception, and communication development in children with significant developmental challenges.

Our clinical faculty pioneer innovative treatment approaches, including culturally-sensitive care for Native American populations, inclusive school-based speech therapy methods, and home/community-based language intervention strategies.

Students gain hands-on experience at the renowned Schiefelbusch Speech Language Hearing Clinic in Lawrence, serving clients of all ages statewide. This clinical training follows a cooperative approach that involves both professional staff and patients' family members in the educational process.
