Our program offers comprehensive Japanese language education from introductory to advanced levels, covering both conversational and written skills. We also provide specialized Japanese courses on a rotating schedule, such as business Japanese, translation studies, and classical Japanese. The program is open to complete beginners, heritage speakers, and everyone in between. You'll receive fundamental training in Japanese language, literature, linguistics, and cultural studies. With our distinguished faculty, passionate language instructors, vibrant Language House community, and active student organization, you'll find an inclusive environment to pursue your interest in Japan alongside like-minded peers. The Japanese program combines the personalized attention of a small liberal arts college with the extensive resources of a major research university.
The Japanese Major and Minor programs equip students with valuable skills for careers related to East Asia in various fields including academia, arts, commerce, public service, international affairs, and media. Many students choose to combine Japanese studies with another discipline like business, computer science, engineering, political science, economics, or journalism, while also working toward an East Asian Studies Certificate.
High school students and students with fewer than 12 semester hours or 18 quarter hours of university-level credit beyond secondary school should apply as freshman applicants.
