Our department provides extensive undergraduate programs covering Russian, Polish, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Turkish, and Persian/Tajik/Dar/Farsi. Each language program features a core curriculum focused on developing speaking, listening, reading, and writing abilities. During summer sessions in Lawrence, we also provide an intensive introductory Russian course. Recognizing how transformative study abroad experiences can be for personal development, we offer numerous opportunities to learn these languages beyond our campus. Imagine the incredible photos you could capture in these unique, less-traveled destinations - from studying at Moscow's Higher School of Economics for a semester to summer programs in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, or Zadar, Croatia and Lviv, Ukraine.
Beyond language instruction, our multidisciplinary department emphasizes cultural understanding of the region while building critical thinking and writing competencies. Students can explore topics ranging from vampire mythology in Slavic and American cultures to robotics in science fiction literature, examine how language shapes identity, and engage with socialist, Marxist, and other Russian political philosophies.
We encourage students from diverse backgrounds to pursue a Slavic studies major or minor alongside another academic discipline.
