The Master of Science in physics program mandates completion of at least 30 semester hours of graduate-level coursework. Students must complete all 30 s.h. in courses numbered 4000 or higher, with a minimum of 15 s.h. from 5000-level classes. A minimum of 24 s.h. must be earned through the University of Iowa after being admitted to the Physics and Astronomy Department. Participants must maintain a minimum program GPA of 2.75 (3.0 for doctoral candidates).
Individual study plans should maximize advanced coursework based on each student's capabilities and prior training. Students may allocate up to one-third of their coursework to related scientific disciplines outside physics (such as mathematics, chemistry, astronomy, earth sciences, or engineering).
The degree offers both thesis and critical essay options. Thesis candidates must produce original research, either experimental or theoretical, while critical essay students may complete up to 6 s.h. through PHYS:7990 Research: Physics or PHYS:7992 Individual Critical Study. The physics and astronomy graduate program features personalized guidance, with each incoming student receiving a faculty advisor to help design their academic path and monitor their advancement.
A U.S. bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university, or an equivalent degree from another country as determined by the Office of Admissions with a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.00.
