Students enrolled in the MA in Music Education program can opt for either a practical or research-focused track, selecting appropriate courses in coordination with the music education advisor. Those who hold an undergraduate degree (commonly a BA or BM in music performance) and seek Iowa certification alongside their MA can pursue the Music Education Certification pathway.
Music education courses may comprise one-third to two-thirds of the degree, with a minimum of half the credits coming from graduate-level coursework. The practice-focused track enhances specialized teaching and performance skills for educators, requiring at least 50% of studies in performance or pedagogy, culminating in a final project.
The research-focused track prioritizes theoretical exploration and scholarly work in music education, with over half the curriculum dedicated to research and related fields. Completion of a thesis is mandatory for this track.
A U.S. bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university, or an equivalent degree from another country as determined by the Office of Admissions with a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.00.
