Geographic information science explores geography using digital tools. It employs geographic information systems, remote sensing (mainly analyzing satellite images), and spatial modeling (visualizing, studying, and mapping spatial data) to investigate geographic trends and mechanisms. Geographic information systems (GIS) and their digital spatial data play a key role in shaping smart city development, managing natural resources, aiding community disaster response, and tracking disease outbreaks. These systems and data also assist with daily activities like planning driving routes, locating friends and family via phone apps, or checking bus arrival times.
The Geographical and Sustainability Sciences department collaborates extensively with numerous centers, departments, and researchers throughout the university, such as The Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research, the Iowa Geological Survey, the College of Public Health, International Programs, and the Departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computer Science, Biology, and Statistics and Actuarial Science.
