Iowa's Theatre Program brings together students and faculty committed to crafting innovative theatrical productions within an encouraging academic setting. Within the expansive College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, you can combine theatre studies with diverse majors, graduating with both the abilities and self-assurance to express yourself and shape your artistic journey. The Department of Theatre Arts serves as a renowned hub for theatrical innovation, housing the prestigious Iowa Playwrights Workshop—one of the nation's top graduate playwriting programs. Alumni have made their mark on Broadway, television, and film, earning accolades including MacArthur Genius Awards, Emmys, and nominations for Tonys and Oscars.
With a focus on artistic innovation, Iowa's program delivers thorough training paired with personalized mentorship. The department presents 25-30 annual productions spanning various genres and formats—surpassing the output of many universities in just one year. Students enjoy unparalleled access to hands-on experience across all facets of theatre, collaborating with industry veterans while mastering cutting-edge technologies in professional environments.
Students must meet the following requirements for admission: completion of academic upper secondary school (generally a total of 12-13 years of primary and secondary education); a corresponding secondary school diploma or leaving certificate; completion of minimum high school course requirements of the following: 4 years of English/language arts; 2 years in a single language of world languages; 3 years including courses in physical science, biology, chemistry, environmental science and physics of natural science; 3 years of social studies; 2 years of algebra; and 1 year of geometry.
