An elementary education degree equips students for certification to teach from kindergarten to sixth grade, with options to focus on specialized subjects like art, language arts, or reading. Iowa's education program boasts a 10:1 student-faculty ratio, offering the resources of a Big Ten university while maintaining a close-knit, small-college atmosphere. Professors know students by name, and the program fosters an inclusive learning environment that values diversity.
From their first semester in the Teacher Education Program, Iowa's elementary education majors engage with local Iowa City schools. Hands-on classroom experiences—including observation and assistance—begin in the introductory course and continue until the student teaching semester. This final phase provides placements across Iowa, nationwide, and even internationally. Alumni go on to shape young minds through rewarding teaching careers both in Iowa and globally.
