As a medical laboratory scientist (MLS), your role involves diagnosing patient conditions through analysis. You'll examine blood, tissue, and bodily fluid samples to detect illnesses ranging from minor to severe, confirm pregnancies, measure drug or alcohol concentrations, and assess medication effects on diseases. The University of Indianapolis offers a medical laboratory science program that blends classroom instruction with hands-on clinical experience, equipping you for diagnostic work in hospitals, clinics, and commercial laboratories. While often working behind the scenes, your contributions will be essential to patient care.
This rigorous degree program demands three years of academic study at UIndy followed by a 12-month clinical rotation in a hospital lab during your senior year. The initial three years focus on building scientific expertise through prerequisite courses in organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, microbiology, and immunology.
