The Department of Geography and Geographic Information Science grants either a Master of Arts or Master of Science degree to students who fulfill the department's general M.A./M.S. criteria (outlined in this document) along with the specific requirements of one of its programs (Geographic Information Science, Society, Space and Environments, or Environmental Studies in Physical Geography), each detailed separately. Under special circumstances, students may pursue a degree outside standard programs through individual faculty arrangement and approval from the Director of Graduate Studies. The Master's program aims to establish a structure enabling candidates to develop expertise in at least one specialized area of geography, supported by proficiency in a core research method and fundamental knowledge of geographic information systems (GIS). The degree curriculum combines structured coursework, seminar participation, and hands-on research experience.
