The Department of Spanish and Portuguese provides graduate programs culminating in Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Spanish and Portuguese, along with a specialized focus in Second Language Acquisition and Teacher Education (SLATE). Students pursuing the Spanish M.A. must select between two specialization tracks: Spanish Linguistics or Spanish Literatures and Cultures. Alongside meeting the Graduate College's standard requirements, those specializing in Spanish Literatures and Cultures must successfully complete a comprehensive exam covering their coursework and a general reading list. Alternatively, students focusing on Spanish Linguistics must submit a research paper instead of taking a traditional comprehensive exam.
