The French Program at Illinois provides an extensive curriculum covering French language, linguistics, literature, culture, and film studies to support both undergraduate and graduate students in achieving their academic and career objectives. Most classes are conducted in French within small groups, ensuring an immersive learning environment with personalized attention. Students can participate in short-term or extended study abroad opportunities in Paris and Arles for undergraduates, while graduate students benefit from exchange programs with partner institutions in France, Quebec, and Belgium. Recognized by the French Embassy in the U.S., Illinois is among 17 Centers of Excellence nationwide. At the master's and doctoral levels, students can specialize in French Studies, French Linguistics, or French Language Learning/SLATE. Additionally, French graduate students may pursue Ph.D. Certificates in Romance Linguistics or Second Language Acquisition and Teacher Education (SLATE). Following our longstanding approach, key courses across all degree programs are primarily taught in French and frequently connect to ongoing faculty research initiatives.
