The Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (TAM) PhD program, housed in the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering, stands out as one of the few globally, providing an intensive curriculum with defined core and breadth requirements. These mandatory courses guarantee that all TAM graduate students build both a deep and extensive grounding in mechanics and applied mathematics. The TAM doctoral program necessitates a research-focused qualifying exam presentation, with most students joining after obtaining a BS degree and subsequently earning a non-thesis MS degree upon finishing their required graduate coursework. To qualify for the Doctor of Philosophy degree, students must complete at least 32 graduate credit hours beyond their bachelor's degree while maintaining a minimum 3.0 GPA. This coursework must encompass 16 hours of core classes (or their equivalents as assessed by the Associate Head for Mechanics) in applied mathematics, fluid mechanics, and solid mechanics, taken either at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign or another institution. Furthermore, students must complete 16 additional credit hours distributed across these key areas: two courses from applied mathematics, fluid mechanics, and solid mechanics; one course in materials mechanics; and at least one course in computational or experimental mechanics.
