The Music Education PhD program at Illinois focuses on equipping students for roles as music education professors, scholars, and field leaders. Candidates take rigorous coursework covering diverse research methodologies, theoretical frameworks, and scholarly evaluation, while working closely with faculty mentors from music education and other disciplines. A key component of the Illinois doctoral experience involves joining the MOSAIC Consortium, an active academic community of graduate students and professors. Qualified students may receive the Marilyn Pflederer Zimmerman Fellowship in Music Education, linked to the Zimmerman Endowed Chair position. The program also provides the Dr. Charles Leonhard Dissertation Research Award to support doctoral candidates during their final research phase.
